Watchdog: Red Light Camera Law ‘Fundamentally Flawed’

Red light cameras throughout Columbus may be challenged in court due to a “shaky law” which they are based on, according to “10 Investigates.” City documents show that between January and April, approximately 15,000 citations have been issued by the cameras for turning right on a red light. Upon implementing the red light camera program, Ohio enacted a law stating that it’s “illegal to move past the stop bar whenever there is a steady red light.” However, in what seems to be contradictory, Ohio law states that “it is OK to turn right on red, unless signs are posted that prohibit right turns.” None of Columbus’ intersections with red light cameras have such signs. The constitutional watchdog group “Columbus’ 1851 Center for Constitutional Law” believes the law to be unconstitutional. “This is a viable challenge. We’ll support that attorney with legal research and legal briefing and make sure that the people of Ohio are ultimately able to limit their government and keep a little bit of their own money in their pocket,” said the center’s spokesman Maurice Thompson.

A $95 ticket for not coming to a complete stop on a red light before turning right, huh? I love it when government officials claim this is for our safety and not about revenue
