Lansdale Parking Fines Could Go Up

The city of Lansdale, PA, will raise its parking fines once the city council approves a measure authored by the Public Safety committee. Currently, parking fines are $3, and once the measure is passed, they will cost approximately $15 per ticket. “It costs us roughly $10 to have a parking ticket processed, so for every parking ticket we wrote, we’ve been losing almost $10. Now we’re hoping to make a little on that,” Mike Sobel, the committee’s chairman said. Although estimated revenues from parking citations are unknown, officials believe it could help with the city’s budget and possibly bring it to a “break even level.”

Which is why municipalities are so eager to utilize them. “There’s all kinds of technology out there to not only make roads safer, but in some cases have fines and produce revenue. This is something we can’t afford to let go,” said Rep. Joe Markosek. Earlier in the year, a red light camera bill passed both the House and the Senate with only one dissenting vote. The measure would allow cities throughout the state to adopt photo-enforcement – which is currently only used by Philadelphia. As for that dissenting vote, it belonged to Senator Jim Ferlo. There are any number of concerns on why I have voted no. One being it’s not about pedestrian or vehicular safety, but it’s about raising revenues,” he said.
