New York Pols Want Cut of Foreign Aid Withheld From Countries With Outstanding Parking Tickets

New York City is not giving up on its quest to collect revenue from unpaid parking tickets received by foreign diplomats. “There’s no such thing as ‘diplomatic immunity’ from paying parking tickets,” said Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island). Currently, there is over $16 million in unpaid tickets owed to the city by such diplomats. And given the city’s current budget situation, the Bloomberg administration has gotten behind new legislation which would not only allow the city to collect money, but would also funnel the money directly to the city as opposed to state coffers. Simply put by one of the city’s many messengers: “If I gotta pay up, they gotta pay up. If we are sending these countries money, then they better well pay up.”

Although this was good news for parking ticket scofflaws, the city (obviously) did not like it. The bill’s sponsor, Eric Schniederman, who will be running for attorney general, is currently working on an amendment which would allow the city to continue to tow cars owned by scofflaws. “Once we learned that the city had issues with it, we worked with them immediately to modify it so that its intent remains the same, while any unintended consequences are averted,” a Schneiderman staffer said.

In 2002, Olympic gold medalist, Jack Shea, was killed by a drunk driver. The driver managed to “escape prosecution because his blood was drawn without a doctor present.” Now, New York state legislatures are pushing a bill which would close that loophole. The bill is now only awaiting approval from Governor Paterson.
