Car Renters: Beware Traffic Cameras

A new “partnership” between rental car companies and traffic camera operators is streamlining the process of holding rental car drivers responsible for photo-enforcement tickets they receive. “Since 2008, several of the nation’s largest car-rental companies have shared rental and credit card information with a division of American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the nation’s largest operator of speed-limit and red light cameras.” Not surprisingly, some people aren’t happy with the fact that not only are these private companies passing people’s credit card information back and forth, but they’re being automatically billed for the citations – without having a chance to fight them in court. As Autoblogs.com points out, it “does away with that whole ‘due process of the law’ thing on which our entire justice system is based.”
