Daley Suspends Revenue Director Over Parking Ticket Memo

Mayor Richard Daley has vowed to “discipline the bureaucrat” that sent a memo to the Chicago PD, telling supervisors that they were on pace to “fall short of this year’s targets for parking ticket revenue.” Bea Reyna-Hickey, who runs the department from which the memo came from, will be suspended for one day “at an undetermined time.” “It’s just stupid. Some bureaucrat sent that memo. We are trying to find out who sent it. There will be discipline,” Daley said. The Mayor also added that ticket revenue has actually been on a steady decline over the last 10 years and “that’s fine.” Other city officials did not take the memo lightly and voiced their displeasure. “I wonder if the reason they are not writing tickets is because they are taking care of some important things, since we have a shortage of cops. You can only do so many things. Maybe going after gang bangers is a bit more important than writing tickets for expired meters,” said Alderman Joe Moore. Mark Donahue, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police chimed in as well, saying that officers “spend 20 of the 24 hours a day chasing their radio calls and don’t have the time to write these parking tickets. That’s at the low end of what police priorities should be about…It’s apparent (city officials) care more about the fiscal crisis that’s occurring.”

Chicago “No Parking” Ticket

I was in Wrigleyville last week, during a game, although I wasn’t at the game. My friend and I were in separate cars, and were told by a ticket agent that we could park legally in the spots we were in. You know where this is going.. Less than an hour later, we returned to find tickets on our windshields. We actually found the guy who told us it was OK to park there and said that he didn’t know who wrote the tickets, but they shouldn’t have been written. Nice job, boys!

Police Dispatch Tapes Released in DUI Death

Kathie Lafond is suing the Chicago Heights Police Department, a Chicago Heights police officer, as well as her ex boyfriend in connection with the death of her 5-year old son. The incident took place in early May after an officer took Lafond into custody for driving on a suspended license. He then handed the keys to Lafond’s boyfriend, Cecil Connor, who drove away with the woman’s 5-year old son in the car. A short time later, he crashed into a tree, killing the boy. Tests showed that Connor had a BAC of more than three times the legal limit. In court, audio tapes were played, in which the officer originally told the dispatcher the Connor showed up after the traffic stop – and then changed his story, stating that Connor was in the passenger seat. Despite Lafond’s claim that she told the cop that Connor was too drunk to drive, the Chicago Heights Police Department says “its officer said Connor didn’t appear drunk and Lafond never told him that her boyfriend was drinking.”

Served for a Red Light Camera Ticket?

I’ve heard that if you don’t pay these, they have to serve you in person – otherwise they can’t collect on them. Does anyone know if that’s true or not?
