Detroit Municipal Parking Enforcement Will Boot Vehicles This Weekend

As if Detroit residents didn’t have enough to worry about with the economy being the way it is, the city is laying one more layer of burden upon those who don’t have the money to pay their parking tickets: booting. Residents with at least six outstanding parking citations will be eligible to have their cars booted – rendering them immobile. At that point, those individuals will have to pay their fines, “along with towing fees and other costs” to recoup their cars. Payment plan opportunities have been set up to help motorists with the costs, and anyone who participates in such a plan will not have their cars booted.
Many Speed Limits Set Too Low

According to a recent investigation, many Detroit speed limits are actually unlawful. This is because in 2006, Public Act 85 was passed requiring local governments in Michigan “to conduct studies to set proper speed limits.” According to Lt. Gary Megge, the head of the Michigan State Police Traffic Services Section, most municipalities still have not complied. In fact, when Detroit News randomly selected 10 local roadways deemed to be “speed traps” by the National Motorists Association, they determined that no studies had been conducted on any of them. Megge believes the reason behind the lack of action by local governments is revenue generated by speeding tickets. Keeping the speed limits “artificially low” allows for more tickets to be written.
Ann Arbor City Council Considering Parking Fine Hike

The parking ticket fine hikes are part of a bigger plan to raise an extra $3.4 million annually, but State Administrator claims that is not the reason behind the proposal.
