Number of Unpaid University Parking Tickets Increases

Schools such as West Virginia University, University of Florida and the University of Texas at Austin, are forcing school officials to clamp down on unpaid parking tickets. The colleges have $560,417, $223,000 and $560,000 in outstanding tickets, respectively. Consequences of outstanding parking tickets can range from a hold being placed on the student’s account which would prohibit that individual from registering from classes to their vehicles being towed – which would force the students to pay all tickets, plus the towing fee before re-claiming their car. In an effort to close budget gaps, schools are also becoming increasingly vigilant in collecting fines attached to parking tickets. In addition to hiring collection agencies to do the dirty work for them, schools like UTA are purchasing high-tech equipment such as cameras which scan each car entering a lot and send notices to officers if a car has unpaid tickets.
