It’s Not Your Imagination. Recessions Do Lead to More Traffic Tickets

Forbes Magazine tackles the question (that everyone already knows the answer to) of whether or not municipalities issue more traffic tickets during poor economic times, and comes up with the answer that everyone already knew anyway: Yes, during poor economic times, local governments write more tickets to help with budget problems. The article mentions two recent studies which covered the issue. The first, a 2006 (recent?) study, by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, looked at “the number of traffic tickets issued by every North Carolina county from 1990 to 2003.” It found that for every 1% increase in the unemployment rate, there would be a 6.4% jump in the number of traffic tickets. The 2nd study, out of Townson Univeristy and George Mason University, concluded that while the 2006 study is accurate, it might not be such a bad thing. Their study found that the increase in tickets usually results in a decrease in traffic accidents.

Columbus Blocking Driveway Ticket

July 23, 2010 by Nelsonfan · 9 Comments

I found a $75 parking ticket on my car today for a “blocking driveway complaint.” But the thing is…..I WASN”T EVEN BLOCKING THEIR STUPID DRIVEWAY. A tiny piece of my bumper stuck out of the tiny slab of curve they think a car can actually fit into, but in NO WAY obstructed their entry or exit. I was so angry…i wrote a nasty note and left it on their driveway. UGH…i mean, it’s one thing if i’m an obstruction…but it’s another thing to be completely anal and on a power trip to call the cops to make someone else’s life miserable. It’s really not worth $75 dollars. JERK.
