Unpaid Tickets for Parking in Phoenix Pile Up for Rental-Car Companies

In these tough economic times, the city of Phoenix is attempting to collect on unpaid parking tickets to help with its budget woes. In its effort to do so, it has compiled a “boot-and-tow” list which includes any car with at least three unpaid parking tickets, and makes that vehicle eligible to be towed by the city. And on that list, are multiple cars owned by rental car companies who owe the city almost $100,000 in unpaid parking fines. This, of course, could leave tourists in the middle. As officers are required to tow any car with at least three unpaid tickets, a traveler could leave a venue and find his rental car has been towed – by no fault of his own. And with the city using new license-plate-reading cameras, which scan thousands of plates per day for parking-ticket scofflaws, this is becoming increasingly plausible.

Mesa Police Suit Dropped by DUI Attorney

DUI attorney, Jason Squires, and his wife, Heather, have dropped a federal lawsuit against the city of Mesa, the Mesa Police Department, and two Mesa police officers. After stating that she “is in the middle of a high-risk pregnancy and under strict doctor’s orders to avoid all stress,” Heather asked a federal judge to dismiss the suit, which the judge agreed to do. No financial settlement was made. The suit stemmed from an April 17th, 2008, incident in which the Squires were pulled over by Officer Bonifacio Gonzalez while Heather was driving. Gonzalez stated that Heather had “bloodshot, watery eyes and a flushed face.” After Jason Squires advised his wife to not take a sobriety test, Gonzalez arrested Heather on suspicion of DUI. Once in jail, a blood test for alcohol came back negative. In the suit, Jason claimed that the arrest was in retaliation for a client he represented in a DUI trial who had been arrested by Gonzalez. The client was acquitted.
