No Parking BEFORE 6pm! (Horror Story)

I went to meet some friends downtown last weekend, and intentionally timed it so I would get there a little after 6pm – when parking is free even in front of meters. I pulled into my space at 558pm and waited until my cell-phone said 601pm before exiting the car. When I returned to my car after dinner, I had a ticket that said I parked 559pm without feeding the meter. Unbelievable.

Red-Light Cameras Preventing Wrecks, Officials Say

May 14, 2010 by Smitty · 8 Comments

According to city officials, intersections in Austin with red-light cameras, have seen a 30% drop in crashes. Beginning in May, 2008, the cameras were “phased in at nine intersections,” and have generated more than $100,000 in revenue from citations. Each citation is $75, but that number can significantly rise if late fees are accumulated. Despite those numbers, a spokesman with the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas believes there are still flaws in the system used to ticket red-light violators, such as ticketing the wrong person. “While there may be a few benefits to the system, no one has still figured out how to fix the due process issue of cars being ticketed and not the driver,” she said. Redflex Traffic Systems has a 15 year contract with the city of Austin, which was approved by the City Council in 2007. Redflex receives $4,870 per camera, per month, to cover the program.

Red Light Cameras: The Media Wakes Up

The National Motorists Association’s blog provides a glimpse into the changing attitude in media, about ticket cameras. Whereas in the past, quotes from ticket camera companies were reported as fact, statistics provided by local governments weren’t questioned, and opposing views were limited, the majority of current articles about photo enforcement are negative. The article specifically mentions an editorial from the Las Cruces Sun-News stating that they’ve “been troubled by the city’s secretive administration of this policy.” Article concludes by encouraging citizens to write to their local newspapers or lawmakers, expressing their feelings on the issue.
