DPS is hoping for around 100 more over the holiday weekend, with the program continuing “for weeks to come” after that.

Phoenix Will Keep Using Traffic Cameras

Even after Governor Jan Brewer ordered the state’s highway photo-enforcement program to be shut down as of July 15th, Phoenix police claim that they continue to see “safety benefits of photo radar and red light cameras.” Currently, Phoenix uses two photo radar vans around 350 school zones. This program will continue to operate after the highway program comes to an end. Redflex Traffic Systems, the Phoenix-based company which operates the photo-enforcement programs signed a new contract with the city of Phoenix. One controversial aspect of red-light cameras is the issue of right-turn violations, which may include a driver not coming to a complete stop before making a right-turn on a red-light. Although these may seem like minor infractions, the fines can be as hefty as those for drivers who speed straight through a red-light. Bill Fisher, who oversees the photo enforcement program for the Phoenix Police Traffic Bureau says they are reviewing data to “gauge the effectiveness of photo-enforcement technology and the volume of right-turn red-light violations being sent to Phoenix Municipal Court.”
